Finding what you want
I already know what I want ...
If you already know what you want -- if you have an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) or the title -- you may use the find/buy (quick search) box in the top menu bar.
Searching the database
Our on-line database includes some 800,000 titles from America, Britain and Australia. The search button is located on the top navigation bar.
I can't find ...
Just because a book doesn't appear to be in the database doesn't mean that it isn't available. Please just ask; there is a book search request on the search page.
What does it mean?
Since we offer British, American and Australian books, the format description may be different for books coming from these countries. Trade Cloth is the American term for Hardcover, Trade Paper and Mass Market Paperback are the American terms for paperbacks. If in doubt, just email us.
New & Recommended
The top navigation bar includes a pull-down menu for New and recommended books. This is like our shop's front window. Here you will find bestseller lists, new books in various categories, lists of books which recently won awards or which have been recently reviewed in the international or local press.
Can you recommend ...?
Of course! We do this all the time. On the search page, you will find a form where you can ask whatever you like ... or just call us.
Ordering, payment & delivery
How do I place an order?
When you click on an order button (), the book is automatically added to your shopping cart. You can check the contents of your cart at any time by clicking on the shopping cart icon at the upper right of each page.
To remove an item, set the quantity to zero and press update cart.
When you are finished shopping, check your shopping cart one more time, select method of payment and press check out / complete order. Complete the billing and delivery information and select the method of payment.
Delivery is free?
Yes, delivery is free within Hong Kong for orders of HK$280 or above. If your order is below HK$280, you can choose to pick up your order and we will not charge you for delivery. Deliveries outside Hong Kong incur an additional charge.

When can I expect delivery?
We get deliveries from our suppliers approximately 3-4 times per week. Since the ordered items may come from more than one source, you can usually expect delivery within about 2 weeks. We will notify you if your selected items is not going to be available in the 2 week period.
Generally, deliveries are made in about 2 weeks, except for those items that have a clear indication of a delivery lead time of over 4 weeks or for multiple copies. Except for titles that are not indicated as having a delivery lead time of more than 4 weeks, we guarantee delivery within one calendar month, and you can elect to receive a full refund on these undelivered titles if you so choose.
A backordered item is marked with "#" beside their ISBN number or specified on the website. Such items are out of stock or out of print and a delivery time of 4 weeks or more is expected. In the case of cancellation due to our inability to suppy the item, delivery will be arranged for the remainder of your order.
Please also see our policies page.
How are books delivered?
In Hong Kong, we use HongkongPost Courier Service (where available; in those areas where the service is not available, books will be delivered by ordinary postal service). Please be sure to include a telephone number with your order. Some customers have found it more convenient to have their orders delivered to an office address, simply because there will always be someone to sign for the delivery of the package.
Alternately, you can choose to have us hold the book for pick-up at your convenience in our office.
For very large orders, we may use a special delivery service.
Deliveries outside Hong Kong
Yes, we can deliver to most of Asia. These deliveries go by the very cost-effective SpeedPost courier service - not only is it fast, but we can track delivery. We have tried to keep delivery costs low - in most cases, you will pay a maximum of HK$150 or so, and for large orders, please let us know in advance and we may be able to work out a lower-cost shipping charge.
Customers outside Hong Kong should please note that their deliveries may involve customs declarations or duties. These, and the costs associated, will have to be taken care of by the customer. Please also note that we unfortunately cannot accept cheques from customers outside Hong Kong - please pay by credit card or bank draft. If you want to pay by T/T, please ask us to provide an invoice.
Buying with confidence
What is publisher's list price?
This is the price on the back of the book, the price you would pay in most bookshops in the US or Britain. This is the price we use when we sell to you, converted into HK$ at prevailing exchange rates. For US$/HK$, we use 8 (not 9 or 10 as is all too common); for £/HK$, we use something close to the average exchange rate over the past few months.
Some books (for example, technical or academic books) do not have a formal publisher's list price; in these cases we will try to use a price that corresponds to the prevailing price in the country of origin.
There are also cases where some books, usually those in special bindings, technical or academic books, which cannot be, unfortunately, be offered at list; these require a special order and a surcharge. But these amount to only a small portion of the books available for ordering from our site. In such cases, the book will be clearly indentified that this is a Special Order book with a surcharge.
Are your prices really the lowest?
We do not claim that our prices are really the lowest. Our policy is transparency pricing and we will attempt to sell at publisher's list price, which is matched only by some books offered by some bookstores; local bookstore prices are usually higher than that (publisher's list prices are often covered up so you may not realise this). And bookstores don't deliver. And when you visit the bookstore, you must pay for parking or the bus or a taxi.
We also are quite sure that in almost all cases, we can offer books for less than the price offered by the leading US and UK on-line booksellers. They sometimes offer prices at a discount from list, but shipping can cost as much as the book itself, especially if the total order includes items that are delivered in separate deliveries. If you compare total costs, you will find us less expensive in almost all cases.
In addition, we carry various versions for the same book. For books that are published in both the US and the UK, you may find the UK version cheaper than the US for one item and vice versa for another. You can elect to combine books from both the US and the UK in the same order. You may also prefer to order versions from a particular country because of the way the words are spelt, which is probably more important for children's books.
Even when we ship to other places in Asia, we believe our prices are lower - especially when you compare the price for secure delivery that we offer.
Why don't you discount like other on-line booksellers?
Some on-line bookstores in Asia provide discounts off "list" - but this "list price" they quote is not the price on the back of the book.
Or we could discount and then make up the difference by charging for delivery (which is what most US and UK on-line booksellers do). But we prefer that the price you see is the price you pay - no add-ons, no extras.
And, in addition, we offer considerable savings off of list using our unique BookBucks programme, which is available to members.
What if there is a problem with my books?
We stand by what we sell. If there is a problem with any of your books - a publishing defect or damage- return them to us within fourteen (14) days in the original packaging and condition and we will provide a replacement. Of you wish to return the book for other reasons and wish to receive a refund, there will be a 25% handling charge with a minimum of HK$10 per item.
Please see the policies page for details on returns.
What about privacy?
We value our customers. Your purchase shouldn't result in your starting to receive a lot of annoying junk mail or anything else. Therefore, no personal information and/or purchase information will be released to third-parties (except those companies offering special additional benefits to Paddyfield customers, and these will be clearly marked) and will be only used by us to assist us in serving you better.
Please see the policies page for details on returns.

Do I need to be a member?
Anyone can buy books from Paddyfield.com, but ...
Members earn BookBucks:
Think of this as a 'frequent fliers' programme for book lovers. Each time a member orders more than HK$500 of books, he or she earns BookBucks, which can be used to purchase more books. And the more you order, the more BookBucks you earn!
|amount ordered||BookBucks earned|
|each HK$100||10 BookBucks|
For more information on BookBucks, please see the members page.
(BookBucks are not earned on purchases made from partner sites or on credit purchases.)
You also have the additional benefit of being able to keep your purchase history available on-line for perusal.
How do I become a member?
Merely fill in the on-line form and send it to us.
Privacy for members
You may choose to not register as a member because you do not wish to have all your purchases identified to be for the same customer. We certainly value your decision to have this information private so orders that are not registered as member's purchases will not be linked together as purchases from the same customer.
We now work with many Hong Kong schools (both international and 'local') to offer students and parents a wider selection of English-language books at lower prices than are available through bookstores or other book clubs. Schools can participate in a variety of programmes, including book clubs, supplementary reading lists and book fairs.
Please see the school programmes for a complete description.
In addition, we offer a special school ordering service to allow schools to prepare purchase orders, create and maintain booklists, etc. (This service is for use by teachers, librarians and administrators, not students and parents.) For further information, please call us at 2511-4211.
Participating schools (or other qualified educational institutions) receive a 10% discount for purchases over and above a certain order value. An invoice will be sent to the school for the purchase amount and payment is due on presentation. We reserve the right to revoke the 10% academic discount for invoices that remain unpaid for over thirty (30) days.
For details on corporate purchasing arrangements, multiple copy discounts and the establishment of in-house corporate/employee bookstore, please see our coprorate page.
For those of you who prefer to order off-line, our catalogue selections can be printed from the catalogue display pages on our site or you may request for a printed copy of The Asian Review of Books. These feature both newly released books and recommended favourites. Starting from January 2003, our regularly published catalogues are only distributed through school bookclubs.
We also have on-line versions of the catalogues if you like the convenience of both catalogue and on-line ordering.
